Can I combine multiple credit cards into one credit?

It may be possible, depending on the institution, the debt amounts, and the client's financial situation analysis. Consolidation allows grouping certain credits and turning several commitments into a new operation. Instead of managing different payments, the goal is to have a new installment.

How it works?

Imagine that you have:

Card A: 2500 € in debt

Card B: 1800 €

Card C: 3.200 €

Debt total: 7500 €

If the operation is approved to consolidate these values, the new credit can be used to pay the amounts covered. It will then pay the new installment according to the contracted conditions.

What is the advantage?

The main advantage may be the simplification of financial management. Instead of tracking different dates, installments, fees, and balances, there is now a single transaction. Depending on the conditions, there may also be a reduction in the monthly installment.

And the card rates?

Credit cards may have different costs than other credit types. Therefore, when consolidating, compare current conditions with the new operation.

No consumer credit, the Bank of Portugal sets maximum rates quarterly for different categories, including credit cards and credit lines. In the third quarter of 2026, the maximum TAEG indicated for credit cards, credit lines, bank current accounts, and overdraft facilities is 18.5%.

This does not mean all cards have this fee. It means there is a regulatory limit applicable to covered categories.

Should I cancel the cards after consolidation?

If consolidation aims to eliminate credit card debt, you should understand what happens to the cards and credit lines involved.

Keep cards available can make using credit easier again.

Therefore, it is important to define a strategy to avoid accumulating debt again after consolidation.

Does consolidating cards always lower the payment?

No. The result depends on the amount, the conditions of the new credit, the term, and other factors. It is possible that debts from several cards can be integrated into a consolidation operation, but approval depends on the institution's analysis.

The goal should not be just to lower the installment: it should be to reorganize credits sustainably.
